With funding from FONTAGRO, INTA and the Universidad Nacional del Comahue, the workshop "Natural Pastures and their use in livestock" was held on April 20, 2022 in the Pilquiniyeu del Limay area, in the province of Río Negro. It was organized by the Rural Extension Agency of INTA Bariloche and taught by Agronomist Federico Boggio and Agronomist Leandro Girardin, professors of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the National University of Comahue.

The activity was attended by producers demonstrating the project, neighbors of the area, teachers and professionals from INTA Bariloche.

Objectives

The FONTAGRO project "Innovation and intensification for adaptation to change in family livestock farming" aims to train producers in the management of pastures to contribute to sustainable livestock farming. Therefore, the main objective of the workshop was the joint construction of tools for practical application in the field on the state of natural pastures and grazing conditions in regional extensive livestock farming.

 Activities

The workshop included plenary sessions and presentations at the Community's shearing shed, and field activities in the community's mallín and the steppes near the shed.

During the day, the context of the local grazing systems, the characterization of the grazing site, the recognition of the plant species present in the pastures and the degree of preference of each one by the cattle, the current grazing conditions: the phenological state, quality and availability of the forage supply and its degree of use were discussed.

Possible management measures to be adopted in the context of drought and in order to maintain the productivity of pastures as the basis of production systems were discussed.

During the event, INTA technicians shared with members of the community the results of the analysis of pasture productivity and quality in the community pasture, which revealed opportunities for management change.

At the end of the event, a certificate of participation was given to the participants.
