Meeting of the Sustainable Intensification of Livestock Systems with Legumes Project

Published at: 26 December 2022

On October 25, 26 and 27, the 1st face-to-face and virtual meeting of the Sustainable Intensification of Livestock Systems with Legumes project was held. The meeting was a space to share the progress of the investigations carried out in each country and reporting on administrative and technical aspects to meet the objectives established by the project. Due to this, Eugenia Saini (FONTAGRO), Cecilia Gianoni (PROCISUR) and Ernesto Fernández (ArgenINTA Foundation) participated.

The presentations of the advances of the investigations were in charge of the referents of each country, while postgraduate students presented the results of their private investigations.

One of the objectives of the meeting was to identify similar patterns in the different legume pasture systems of each country, in relation to biological nitrogen fixation, greenhouse gas emissions, carbon stocks and animal productivity. In this regard, two of the conclusions obtained were the following:

- Enteric CH4 emissions decrease when pastures have legumes with optimal condensed tannin contents.

- The pastures with legumes increase the carbon stocks of the first centimeters of the soil.
