Meeting on activities to quantify soil carbon stocks

Published at: 22 March 2021

On Thursday, March 18, Dr. Bruno Jose Rodrigues Alves, a researcher at EMBRAPA Brazil and a specialist in the topic of carbon stocks and greenhouse gas emissions from the soil, gave a talk on soil carbon sampling. The meeting sought to be a meeting space where the minimum guidelines for quantifying soil organic carbon could be discussed, being the central theme of activity 2.2. carbon sequestration of the project, which is led by EMBRAPA-Brasil and INTA-Nicaragua. The topics covered were how to select the systems to be sampled, statistical aspects (number of repetitions and representative samples) and how to conserve, condition and analyze the soil samples in the laboratory.

The virtual meeting lasted two hours and had 35 participants from the eight countries that make up the project, who have different roles within it: referents, researchers and postgraduate thesis students. There was a very active participation, where many concerns were discussed, the most accessible ways to carry out the tasks and the collaboration between countries to be able to do them.

The referents of this project seek to provide, during this year, similar meeting spaces to facilitate the performance of each of the planned activities; also serving as spaces for training and linking researchers in training with experts on different topics. For the next few weeks, a similar event is planned on the subject of biological nitrogen fixation, which will be led by Dr. Fernando Lattanzi (INIA-Uruguay).
