The objective of the meeting, coordinated by Dr. Alejandro Costantini, was to show by country the progress made throughout the year, the activities projected for 2021 and to express the difficulties and possible solutions that have been found when carrying out the work.
During 2020, Uruguay made progress with the national sampling of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) and analysis of carbon stocks; At the same time, Eng. Facundo Lussich defended his master's thesis related to the FBN. Argentina coordinated virtual meetings held between the eight participating countries, analyzed and published data on N2O emissions in livestock systems in the Salado Basin, carried out field trials to evaluate N2O emissions in soils of Córdoba with alfalfa, selected lots to study the FBN in pastures with Lotus tenuis and coordinated and participated in the Conference Cycle "The Agricultural Sector Facing Climate Change" (2 months, 17 virtual meetings). Chile designed field and laboratory tests (suspended by COVID), carried out carbon sampling workshops in soils jointly with Brazil, carried out identification of sampling sites to measure carbon stocks and gave technical talks related to the agricultural sector and climate change. For its part, Brazil carried out monthly sampling of the supply of legumes and grasses; quantified the N set for different systems with different species of legumes, quantified emissions of N2O from the soil with the addition of bovine excreta and calculated emission factors; three graduate theses were defended, a Review was published and training was provided. Paraguay created the interdisciplinary technical work team and selected sampling sites to measure carbon stock and evaluate the productivity of pastures with legumes. Ecuador carried out the identification of pastures with legumes and monitoring of productive performance, measurement of nutritional quality and digestibility of pastures, and workshops with small and medium producers to improve production indices. Nicaragua selection of plots with legumes. Finally, the Dominican Republic carried out technical training and the sampling sites to work in 2021 were located. It should be noted that during 2020 the activities carried out by the eight countries were affected by the pandemic.
