Step forward to Agroecological Model in Family Farming to Alleviate Chicken Coccidiosis

Tests began in experimental boxes to reduce the impact of avian coccidiosis in the production systems used by family agriculture through the use of natural compounds and animal welfare conditions

In an effort to promote more sustainable and efficient agricultural practices in family farming, an experimental trial has been initiated aimed at developing an agroecological model adapted to family poultry for the mitigation of chicken coccidiosis. The trial consists of 25 experimental units, and is carried out within the framework of the FONTAGRO project "Agroecological model for chicken coccidiosis" (ATN/RF 18136 RG), led by Dr. Anabel Rodríguez, a researcher at INTA-Argentina in the IPVET (INTA-CONICET), CICVyA.

Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease that constitutes a permanent threat to family poultry farming, and dependence on anticoccidial chemical drugs has generated a significant environmental impact. This experience seeks to evaluate different treatments, which include feeds with the addition of natural compounds and biopreparations, and animal welfare conditions for which the complexity of the environment was modified.

Dr. Anabel Rodríguez underlined the relevance of this project adapted to family farming: "This trial represents a significant step towards more sustainable agricultural practices focused on animal health in family environments. We seek to provide accessible solutions that benefit both the family farmers and the environment.

This project reflects the continuous commitment to agricultural research and development adapted to local needs and providing feasible solutions. It is expected that the results of the trial will not only offer effective alternatives for its control but also provide valuable perspectives on the implementation of agroecological models that, specifically, lead to the reduction of the impact of coccidiosis and the environmental impact associated with the use of anticoccidial drugs and increase poultry productivity.

The launch of this experimental trial highlights the importance of addressing specific challenges in family farming and demonstrates a proactive approach towards sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.
