Visits to farms of poultry farming families in Chile

Nineteen farms of family poultry in the metropolitan region of Chile were visited, where it was discussed about animal health, and producers were surveyed. In addition, fecal samples were taken from laying hens.

Between April and May, 19 visits were made to farms where 33 adults work, of which 64% are women. In addition, in 20% of the farms, day-to-day management of birds often with the assistance of children. Poultry farming in 53% of the cases is the main family income.

The surveyed farms have between 50 and 1,200 laying birds, and their products are mostly commercialized in itinerant trades.

The producers were surveyed, and the importance of animal care was discussed, 95% did not know that coccidiosis could affect the health of their birds, they showed interest in mitigating its effect and appreciated the information. In addition, fecal samples were taken from the pens to be analyzed in the laboratory.
