The establishment of multipurpose silvopastoral systems advances on small livestock farms in Colombia and Peru

Published at: 18 September 2023

In the first year of the project, silvopastoral systems have been established on 20 small livestock farms in Peru and Colombia.

In 2023, 19.4 hectares of silvopastoral systems will have been established on small livestock farms in Colombia and Peru. Based on an exercise agreed upon with the producers, the plots of each of the farms were selected, trying to avoid areas of waterlogging and high tree cover.

In order to estimate the inputs and the number of plants to be planted, the area of the land that was going to be intervened was measured. The generated polygon was included in the project's geographic information system (GIS) and used to design the planting plan, where the spatial distribution of the woody species is indicated.

With the support of the producer, SSP maintenance activities, replanting and weed control have been carried out. Which has resulted in good vegetative development of the plants, as happens on the farm of Mrs. Olga Lucia Guerrero located in the municipality of Valle de San Juan, department of Tolima, Colombia. Mrs. Olga took advantage of the intervention of the project to renew the pasture of the lot, therefore, all the plant strata were planted, that is, grasses, bushes and trees.

For the second phase of the project, both animal and plant response measurements of the system will be carried out so that producers can verify the benefits of silvopastoral systems on their farms.
