Executive Summary

Pests and diseases cause significant losses in the world food supply, while hundreds of millions of family farmers depend on agriculture to survive. The cultivation of fruit trees is economically very important for the development of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), not only for its nutritional quality, but also because it is a generator of jobs. There are numerous quarantine diseases that threaten the production of fruit trees in the countries of LAC, which have caused millions in other producing regions. Increasing globalization, increased international trade, and climate change are pushing the borders of disease, facilitating its spread. On the other hand, the greater social and market conditions in the use of pesticides modulate the study of diseases that affect crops and represent a challenge in the design of new strategies for their control. The generation and application of technologies (AgTech) for the early detection and prevention of diseases in the Region, under the slogan of applying good practices with low environmental impact, represents an opportunity to prevent the entry and spread of new diseases, and therefore important yield losses, very high eradication costs and export non-tariff barriers. The objective of the proposal is to create a collaborative network for the prevention and control of quarantine diseases of fruit trees in the region.

The technological solution

International collaborative network in order to prevent and detect quarantine diseases (Fusarium race T4, Sharka, Xyllela and Phytoplasmas) in fruit trees (banana, plum, peach, apple, pear, olive and vine) that allows increasing technological capacity in the Region by the exchange of scientific knowledge and experiences.
