Executive Summary

The use of technological innovations associated with agriculture in protected environment conditions allows farmers to reconvert and differentiate their open-field production systems into more productive and sustainable systems from socio-economic and environmental points of view.

The aim of this project is to strengthen the capacity of researchers, producers, and technical assistants to monitor environmental conditions and the behavior of crops within the structures of protected conditions. This will enable them to make crop management decisions in real-time, and to have social, economic, and environmental indicators that allow evaluation of the benefits and limitations of protected agriculture systems as a strategy to sustainably intensify production.

The proposed strategy is to promote a space for interaction to share experiences and strengths of different actors in related issues and develop guide documents that serve as a reference in Latin America for i) use of agroclimatic information and its application in modeling and simulation tools used in the design and optimization of structures for horticultural systems of protected agriculture and ii) the economic, social and environmental benefits of agriculture in protected environments.
