Executive Summary

The costs associated with infectious diseases in aquaculture can be very high, and seriously affect the profits of the activity, and even the subsistence of companies and sources of work. A disease outbreak, depending on the crop, the species and the pathology, can end up causing losses of 10 to 50% in biomass in a single outbreak. Or worse still, the appearance of a devastating disease, such as those caused by viruses, can put the sustainability of the sector at risk.
In order to develop an immunoprophylaxis program for aquaculture species in Latin America, during the 20 months of project execution, products for immunoprophylaxis developed and manufactured by Biodinámica SA were tested, which are characterized by being strong inducers of innate immunity in salmonids. with the objective of studying its application in other aquaculture crops in the region such as tropical species both native and introduced (Cachama blanca, Cachama Negra and Tilapias) and Camarones (white shrimp).
The results showed that the immunostimulating products developed by Biodinámica are innocuous and safe for tropical species such as tilapia and cachamas, without showing adverse effects in any of the conditions tested. In bioassays with cachamas, additionally a higher consumption of food with immunostimulant was found during the evaluated period. This showed that there is technical / economic feasibility for the incorporation of immunostimulant products in aquaculture health programs.

The technological solution

Development of an immunoprophylaxis program for aquaculture species that allows improving the zoosanitary characteristics in culture.

Results

  • A research network at the Latin American level, with an interest in the development and enhancement of immunoprophylaxis techniques for aquaculture.
  • A diagnosis of Latin American aquaculture and its sanitary problems.
  • The immunostimulating products developed by Biodinámica are innocuous and safe for tropical species such as tilapias and cachamas and promote a higher consumption of food.
